Treasures from Afghanistan on display at the British Museum

Gold crown from Tillya Tepe, 1st century AD This crown was found in the tomb of a nomadic woman. It was designed and assembled from different pieces which allowed it to be folded when not in use.

On March 3rd Afghanistan Crossroads of the Ancient World officially opened to the public at the British Museum.  The exhibiton contains treasures from the National Museum of Afghanistan with extraordinary histories.  These precious objects were nearly lost during the years of civil war and Taliban rule.  In 1989 a small group of curators from the National Museum of Afghanistan hid the objects in a secret vault to save them from destruction.  They kept their secret for 13 years until it was safe to reveal the objects in 2003.  You can watch a video of the story of  these hidden treasures on Afghanistan Crossroads of the Ancient World.
