ITP Fellows trip to the Museums Association Annual Conference and Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives
One year ago this month we were enjoying the kind hospitality of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) Museum in India. Creating museums of world stories marked 10 years of the International Training Programme (ITP) and on the 20 & 21 November 2015, we were in Mumbai networking with colleagues from around the world and brainstorming ideas to develop new forms of ‘encyclopaedic’ exhibitions.
Following on from Mumbai, the British Museum (BM) arranged a week-long programme in the UK for selected fellows of the ITP to attend the Museums Association Annual Conference & Exhibition in Glasgow for further networking and skills-sharing, as well as a three-day workshop in Bristol to develop outcomes based on the ITP 10th Anniversary Mumbai workshop.
The conference and workshop took place from 7 to 11 November 2016 and we were delighted to be joined by Jana Alaraj, Palestine, ITP 2011; Manisha Nene, India, ITP 2011; Rige Shiba, India, ITP 2013; Ishaq Bello, Nigeria, ITP 2012 and Wendland Chloe Kiziili, Kenya, ITP 2013.
The Museums Association Annual Conference & Exhibition offered delegates a series of sessions focusing on the themes of People and Places: stories, communities and collections; Being Brave: courage, innovation and risk-taking; and Health and Wellbeing: impact, evidence and delivery. Then, after an amazing train journey through the snowy Lake District, Sue Giles, Senior Curator World Cultures at Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives welcomed us to M Shed to develop an on-line exhibition based on the groups Mumbai 2015 project Bristol: seeing the invisible, one of the ten impressive, imaginative and thought-provoking projects created in India. https://www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/
We enjoyed a very busy and productive 5 days and we’ll be sure to share more information on the development of the on-line exhibition as work progresses.
