Tomorrow is International Museum Day 2022!

Written by George Peckham, ITP Assistant

Tomorrow, Wednesday 18 May, is International Museum Day!

Each year, on 18 May, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) organise International Museum Day. The objective of International Museum Day (IMD) is to raise awareness about the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”

Last year, for International Museum Day 2021, we created a short film with a help of some ITP fellows to celebrate the future of museums. The aim of the video was to share global interpretations of the ideas surrounding the future of museums and the present challenges the cultural sector faces around the world. You can watch the film the fellows made by clicking here.

The theme for International Museum Day 2022 is The Power of Museums. ICOM aim to use the day to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities. They are focussing in particular on three aspects:

  • The power of achieving sustainability.
  • The power of innovating on digitalisation and accessibility.
  • The power of community building through education.

To celebrate International Museum Day 2022, the ITP team will be sharing posts on social media relating to the Power of Museums. We will be sharing posts about the ITP relating to the theme, as well as other news and projects from around the UK.

We invite the ITP network to join us by sharing your own work, or projects from your home, which relate to the theme of the power of museums!
