A goodbye and reflections from Alejandra

Written by Alejandra Reyes-Gonzalez

It has been two months full of activities from conferences to lectures, admin work to trips and I must say that it was challenging, intense and joyful. In these couple of months, I attended sessions with the fellows in my role as ITP Assistant and I was excited to be learning as much as my duties allowed me.

One of the many interesting sessions I liked – I’m very unfair to mention only a few – was the history of the archives at the BM delivered by Francesca Hillier who explained to us the intricate organisation of the documents and archives at the Museum. Very interesting as well was the session run by Alice Parr and Olivia Wheeldon who explained to us how challenging fundraising activities and special projects for the museum is.

Meeting librarians, curators and archaeologists from the museum and from the museums which were visiting was like meeting up with people that you know you will be happy to spend time with…just like friends!

It made me think and highlight the fact that even if we are from different countries and backgrounds, through cultural experiences we can enrich each other’s lives and bring new insights, inspiration and new ideas. Knowing about cultural heritage from different countries around the world helps to create and enrich perspectives for new projects and for future exhibitions.

We are all shaped by our own cultures, by our studies and experiences but deep down is the interest and the wish to dedicate our time to learn about what we love most, the human expression throughout arts. Art is our most intimate expression as human beings and that builds up our history as humanity with all the variety and all the differences, which is what brings all the fun. I stand up for multiculturalism because the societies are like gardens; the more variety of flowers you have the more colourful and beautiful are.
