Reunion in Uganda (Nabukalu Solomy Nansubuga, Uganda, ITP 2018)
Written by Solomy Nansubuga Nabukalu, Conservator, Kabale Museum (Uganda, ITP 2018)
It was on Monday 16th December 2019, when Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum and Andrea Winn, Curator of Community Exhibitions at Manchester Museum, visited Uganda for the very first time. We met at the Uganda National Museum located in Kampala. I met with other ITP fellows, Abiti Nelson Adebo (ITP 2013) and Nyirachiza Jackline (ITP 2013) and together we welcomed Campbell Price who was the lead on a workshop about Museums, Interpretation and Communication in Uganda, otherwise known as the Pearl of Africa. It was a privilege to meet up with these ITP network members for these four days.
During the workshop, we discussed:
- Storage, collections management, cataloguing, archival sources and object histories
- Digital presentation of collections information, Disseminating collections research and Conservation consideration for loans
- How to raise money
- Transforming and development of museums
- Using media to increase visibility
- Use of social media and repatriation
- Fundraising, Community partnership especially for the new setting of the gallery
- Working with communities
- Egyptian World’s galleries for Archaeology and Egyptology
- Label writing and interpretation
- Working with artists and performers
Campbell was jovial and energetic as he led sessions with more than 30 participants both at the Uganda National Museum and at the British Council headquarters with a theme of Past, Present and Future. In his lecture, Campbell discussed the history of Manchester Museum and its plans for the future.
Thank you British Council, Manchester Museum and Uganda Museum for reuniting ITPers again!
