Manchester Art Gallery was established in 1882 and presents the best art and ideas from across the world. Its iconic building sits at the heart of one of the UK’s most dynamic cities. The gallery’s 45,000-strong collection spans six centuries of fine art, design, craft, photography and fashion, with a particular rich collection of 19th-century art, including a large number of outstanding Pre-Raphaelite paintings.
The gallery’s visitor numbers have climbed spectacularly over the last five years, with over 640,000 visitors in 2017 – making it one of the most popular regional galleries in the country. It has vibrant learning programme that engages 60,000 participants annually. Manchester Art Gallery is run by Manchester City Council.
Involvement in ITP
Manchester has been hosting ITP fellows since 2008 and offers a unique combination of spending time at both Manchester and the Whitworth Art Galleries and at Manchester Museum, the latter two institutions controlled by University of Manchester. This gives the fellows the experience of finding out about several different collections and museum practices. We pride ourselves on making the fellows feel welcome, with a seamless transition between the three institutions and a range of other museum visits and contacts in this exciting and walkable city. Fellows can also take the opportunity to use their own time to travel to the nearby cities of Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield.
Continued Dialogue
We have reconnected with fellows at conferences at CSMVS in Mumbai and in Armenia. In collaboration with Armenian fellows and supported by the ITP, we set up a training seminar in Yerevan, Armenia in 2016 and are developing a further practice-sharing and research visit to Armenia in 2018. In March 2019 an education specialist from Manchester Art Gallery facilitated the ITP+ Course on Museums and Education, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai, India.
