In 2016 the ITP offered a Collaborative Award, open to past fellows of the International Training Programme, UK or Programme Partner Museums and British Museum staff who successfully proposed a group project, co-managed by ITP alumni and which took advantage of our global networks. The award sought to result in measurable outcomes with significant, meaningful impact on one or several international institutions.

Road to Reconciliation

Nelson Abiti Adebo, Curator and Senior Conservator at the Uganda National Museum (Uganda, ITP Fellow 2013) was awarded the grant for his project proposal Road to Reconciliation; a collaborative workshop and community exhibition in Uganda. With Hadeer Belal (Egypt, ITP Fellow 2013), Wendland Chole Kiziili (Kenya, ITP Fellow 2013), Jackline Nyiraciza (Uganda, ITP Fellow 2013), Shadia Rabo (Sudan, ITP Fellow 2006) and project partner John Giblin (former Head of Africa at the British Museum), Nelson worked towards creating a touring community exhibition, permanent display refurbishment and a school exhibition kit for South Sudanese refugees in northern Uganda.

In February 2018 the group met at Uganda National Museum in Kampala for a preparatory meeting and community workshop, attended by Uganda National Museum staff, community representatives from northern Uganda and a South Sudanese resident of a refugee camp. The group shared experiences and ideas for the development of the community touring exhibition, engaged with community representatives, reviewed the project objectives and timetable, and developed an implementation plan.

In 2019, as part of the project, team member Hadeer Belal visited the Uganda National Museum to take part in a panel discussion and debate on cultural heritage in Uganda and to share her skills and experiences of museums and culture in Egypt.
