Doris Kamuye

Malindi Museum

Curator

Country: Kenya

ITP Year: 2024

Biography

Doris is a Curator at the Malindi Museum, National Museums of Kenya, where she is responsible for the care and upkeep of 10 national monuments. She routinely works across the four locations where she conducts condition checking for display objects and objects in storage, and is responsible for executing public programmes, and for overseeing the museum’s library and archives. Doris also has a master’s degree in library and information science from Kenyatta University.

Doris is passionate about the role in museums in communities and their ability to enrich the lives of their audiences. She has recently been working on a project documenting local histories and indigenous knowledge based on living memories, and she has produced three sets of information panels to capture these gathered stories. Doris hopes that the experience and knowledge gained on the ITP will further develop this project to document the rich history of Malindi.

During the ITP, Doris enjoyed learning about museum management, fundraising, public programmes and outreach. She was particularly interested to learn more about conservation – particularly for the coastal Malindi climate which is hot and salty.

Doris enjoyed meeting the rest of the 2024 ITP fellows and learning from their professional experiences. She was excited to create connections that will lead to future partnerships and collaborations, especially around the themes of exhibitions, education, and collection care.

At the British Museum

During her time at the British Museum, Doris was based in the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas and her UK partner placement was spent at Tyne & Wear Museums and Archives, Newcastle.

Doris’s participation on the International Training Programme was generously supported by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust.
