Norfolk Museums Service

Norfolk Museums Service (NMS) was established in 1974 when the County and District Councils in Norfolk agreed to delegate their museum powers to a Joint Committee to manage their museums through a countywide Museums Service. This governance model was highly innovate at the time and remains an unique approach today. The service comprises 10 museums and a study centre. The collections they house and the buildings themselves are all of great regional or national importance.

ITP Involvement

Hosting the visiting fellows is the perfect opportunity to share and reflect on what we do with an international constituency of museum professionals. Colleagues at Norfolk Museums Service aim to involve as many colleagues and areas of activity as they can when the fellows are visiting. This means travelling to Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth on the east coast of the county and to Lynn Museum in King’s Lynn 66 miles (or 106 KM) to the west. Visits are also made to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, a working farm and museum deep in the heart of the Norfolk countryside. The home base for trainees is Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.

ITP Fellows also spend time with Teaching Museum trainees, attending a number of training sessions with them and bringing a very welcome new perspective.

Continued Dialogue

In March 2019 an education specialist from Norfolk Museums Service facilitated the ITP+ Course on Museums and Education, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai, India.
